Hollybush Gardens is delighted to announce representation of Joachim Schmid
A photoworker and an archeologist of the vernacular, Schmid sources images from both public spaces such as streets, markets, and increasingly the virtual domain. Schmid’s practice manifests a dedication to culturally devalued and low-grade material, continuously appraising what may be considered quotidian or trivial.

His work often takes the form of extended series that in turn create taxonomies, indexes, registers and ecologies of visual matter: a methodology for representation and reflection. By deconstructing the photographic image itself, Schmid brings issues around authorship, quality, originality and aura to the fore.

With dead pan humour he plays with and levels dichotomies such as high and low, the universal and the singular, undermining canonic aesthetic judgment and calling into question the very meaning of the image.

Joachim Schmid has exhibited at Sala BBK, Bilbao, Occurrence, Montreal, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello-Balsamo/Milan, Les Rencontres d’Arles, Fotohof, Salzburg, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, Centro Cultural UFMG, Belo Horizonte, The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago and the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, to name a few.

As well as being a purveyor of self-published artist books, numerous catalogue texts and articles have been written about his work:

Mousse Magazine 10 : 2007

Observing by Watching: Joachim Schmid and the Art of Exchange
