Observation notes by Enrico Malatesta

The slides are placed on a limited horizon, at a certain distance from the performer, in front of him, within reach, active, already potentially in the space in which they are arranged; the elementary motion of "something" that revolves and knocks together and towards which the assemblages and objects are advanced, as far as possible, to a region of contact and relation, of transmission… the materials have a vitality where sound is the surface, the transient and perishable skin… The sound bricolages of Riccardo are so fragile that their rhythmical character, their reaction, is to resonate with a weightless sound, very short and without participation, without rhetoric…
Riccardo’s sounds, like his instruments, take a position in in space and remain there for a certain time. For me, they are like a bone, what remains…
The movement of what rotates is obsessive and stakes out a territory as if it were a totem; its sphere of influence attracts and repels the two still, prehensile handmade structures, that immobile already convey multiple possibilities of deformations of the rotating sphere and of communication between the various resonators and strikers… I can recognize the familiar drum, in the act of gathering information, revealing all the morphology of its simple surface, which produces a modest, stripped sound, at the periphery of the totem, but with distant resonance…
The percussion is like a bearing from which I can visualize the relations, forces and distances.
The porcupine quill attracts the attention with the energy of a relic of life, remote… the utensil is strange and its form extends with a unique, pointed and almost plastic fragility… I seem to feel its smoothness between the fingers, the quick reactivity to any impulse, its shriek…
The sounds move, deforming, in their continuous rhythmical pace, in the lightness of the impact, while the performer, far away, almost adrift, is increasingly detached from the result and with the discretion of a faithful helper allows the surface of his instruments to be stripped by a playful polyrhythm that conceals an infant’s violence, presenting the sound as if it were a bone set on a table.
